Natalie turned around to the girls behind them and back to Trevor. He had maintained a firm face.
“You’re all not serious.” Natalie claimed, backing out.
“We are.” Erin assured.
The incomers sat on the hillside opposite the couple. Natalie eyed Trevor queerly. He had not said a word and from the way things looked, he arranged for Erin and Ingrid to be around when he mentioned that.
“Trevor?” Natalie snapped.
“Yes Natalie?”
“You’re with them? I can’t be President, much less save a school.”
“Natalie, remember when I once told you that, a time will come when you have to sacrifice for others. This is the time.” Ingrid said.
“Maybe yeah I got you but, President? Hell no. I can’t. I don’t know anything about running a school or… People.” She denied, defiantly.
“You did a great job with Class D, besides, I will always be around to assist you.” Trevor said.
“Always? Trevor? You’re doing your A-level exams soon, you’re going to graduate and leave. You cannot guarantee that I will be able to handle everything.” Natalie argued and turned to the girls. “I can’t be President. I can’t, I’m sorry.”
“Natalie. If you won’t and who will?” Ingrid posed almost desperately.
“I don’t know. Maybe you or Erin or Steven. You guys have long since been studying in Hamerton. You have also been in power for a while.” Natalie suggested.
“Natalie. You can’t draw back from this quest.” Erin spoke rather harshly. “People will die and it’s going to be on your hands because, you’re being given the opportunity to save them and you’re resisting it.”
Natalie got on her feet quickly. She felt like her friends were going to force her into undertaking a huge task that she was not ready for.
“Where are you going?” Ingrid asked for all.
“Home. I’m already scared of all of you.” she declared.
“Natalie you can’t leave.” Trevor begged rising when she started off.
She paused and turned around to face them. “You?” she was looking at Trevor. “All of you. You took part in Caitlin’s death. You are monsters and murderers and I hate you!”
“You don’t know what you’re saying Natalie, stop!” Trevor begged grasping Natalie’s hand when she tried to run off.
“Let go of my hand. You lied to me! You don’t even love me. You don’t trust me.” She replied struggling.
Erin and Ingrid had risen standing behind Trevor.
“Let her go Trevor, she is insane.” Erin said.
“No!” Ingrid snapped at her and turned to Trevor. “Trevor don’t listen to Erin.” She looked at Natalie, crying. “Natalie, I beg you. We had nothing to do with Caitlin’s death. She was my friend. She was their friend too. Trevor tried to keep her from dying.”
Natalie was silent but, still struggling to free herself from Trevor’s clutch.
Erin frowned, made a step forward and broke the connection between Natalie and Trevor. She then stood in front of him, glaring at Natalie. “You want to go? Go! Shift schools, forget about Hamerton. We have been held here captive for the past 4 years but, none of us will be leaving and not coming back. We have a responsibility to this school. Hamerton is a part of us and, we can’t sit down and watch many innocent lives get lost.”
“Erin-” Trevor called.
“Don’t interrupt me. She has no heart. She’s selfish and self-centered. We’ll find another way to save our school.” Erin continued, reproachfully.
Natalie had no words close to her mouth. She felt like a monster but, from how Erin made it look, she had no chance to repent.
“Natalie, please?” Ingrid cried with hope in her old friend.
But, Natalie made few tottering steps backward and run out.
Trevor sighed. He knew that he might never see her again.
