Chapter Three: SOHOT/ SOHOR??
“Natalie? Natalie?” Ivan called, running to Natalie in the heavily crowded hallway.
Natalie, who was nearing the staircase at the end of the hallway, turned around and raised her eyebrows, halting to wait for him.
Ivan increased pace toward her.
Just as the distance narrowed between them, Natalie’s attention was caught by a couple of reporters, led by Cheryl.
She gave Ivan her back and faced the school journalists.
“Miss President. The students have been awaiting your statement on the ball that is to take place tomorrow, in favor of the House Of Representatives, who are due to arrive at 2:00pm this afternoon. Will you tell the media and the Hamerton society who are watching you live on HTV, how you plan to welcome the HOR and what you have instored for them on tomorrow’s ball?” Cheryl asked quickly.
Natalie pulled a screwed face. “The ball is in honor of_”
She begun and was interrupted by Ivan who bumped into them. “Yes, yes.” He said quickly and turned to Natalie who offered him a startled expression. “The President is very much aware of the arrival of the House of Representatives.” He added and turned to the press. “The ball will be grand, most assuredly and our guests will have the most pleasant welcome.”
Cheryl nodded at him.
“There have been concerns that, due to the enormous February intake, the dorm buildings of Hamerton cannot accommodate the visitors. As the President, do you authorize the use of the Leaders’ quarters for the 50 HOR arriving guests?” Another reporter, with a tape recorder, asked Natalie.
Natalie was still lost. She was hardly aware of the House of Representatives’ arrival much less the scarcity of their places to stay.
Ivan took charge again. “We are still discussing that in the administration panel and we hope to come with the conclusion before our guests arrive.”
Natalie nodded, looking boldly at the reporters.
“Can you share the agenda that brings the HOR to Hamerton?” Cheryl added.
“No, no. It is… a surprise! But, it will be good for Hamerton.” Ivan answered and taking Natalie’s hand said, “Now, if you will excuse us. The President cannot answer any questions now. We will call for a press conference later and then we will be able to answer all your questions.”
With a little struggle, Ivan was able to get Natalie out of the media and they walked hastily across the hallway to a staircase on the opposite side.
“What were they talking about?” she asked Ivan, as they neared the first floor of the building.
“What I was about to tell you. The HOR are arriving later at two and you have to prepare for that.”
“How come I am not informed about this? And that there is scarcity of their accommodation… Ivan? Are they coming on short notice?”
“Not exactly. I was with the Vice President last Friday. We thought that we could handle everything.”
Natalie paused just when they were outside her office door. She frowned at him. “You thought that you could handle everything without telling me? Ivan? I needed to know that. I could get ridiculed by the public if I am ignorant of big events happening in school such as the hosting of the HOR.”
He was silent, seeming a bit restless.
She narrowed her eyes. “Ivan. Why did you keep that from me? What are you hiding?”
Ivan put his hand around her and reached for the door knob. She drew back a few steps and he opened the door. “Please?” he asked, waving inside.
She shook her head in disappointment and walked in.
She trod to her desk and leaned on it, waiting for his explanation with her hands crossed below her breasts. “So, tell me.”

Meanwhile, Ingrid was busy placing posters on the school board for the next day’s ball.
She put her hand above her eyebrows, squinting her eyes below the noon sun, to satisfy the organization of the posters.
Appeased, she turned to Carlito who held the posters and glue for her. “We are done.” She announced.
“Okay. Where next?” Carlito asked.
Ingrid looked around the vast green school compound that was also sparsely occupied with students moving here in there. She noticed the evergreen oaks and saw them as spots for placing the posters. “There.”
Carlito nodded and started off while she was held up by a phone, buzzing in her skirt pocket.
She took it out and became alerted after reading the name.
She received it. “Hallow?”
“We have a problem.” A male’s voice greeted.

“What!” Natalie exclaimed, after Ivan’s statement.
She parted her hands and straightened herself.
“Do you see why me and Sylvester decided to hide this from you?” Ivan asked.
“Ivan. This should have been the more reason for you to let me know. So that I could prepare myself. So that I could know what to expect.” She said, pacing to and fro in front of her desk.
“Look at how it is getting to you?” he said, feeling sorry for her.
She paused and turned to him. “I don’t understand. How could_”
The door burst open and the two turned to the front to welcome Ingrid who was panting and seemingly anxious. “Natalie? Did you hear?”
“Yes. And, it seems that everybody did except me.” Natalie said eyeing Ivan reproachfully.
“What are we going to do, Natalie?” Ingrid asked and lowered her voice to add, “Your life is in danger.”
Natalie sighed deeply. “I don’t know now. I… don’t know.” She said somberly.
“We should call Trevor.” Ingrid suggested.
“No. Ingrid. If we try to reach him then his father will realize that we are still communicating. We can’t afford that.” Natalie disagreed. “I don’t want to lose him forever, no.”
“Who helped you the last time?” Ivan asked after a brief moment of contemplating in silence.
“Corny Howls but, I don’t know if…” Natalie begun and sighed with devastation.
“Corny?” Ingrid repeated. “I will see then.”  She said and left.
“Natalie,” Ivan begun trying to approach her.
She drew back, waving her hands in defense. “Please don’t. Just, get my speech ready for the conference you told the media about and send for my vice and the Minister of Dorm Affairs.”

Ivan nodded reluctantly and left.

Who are they talking about and how is he/she a threat to Natalie? Stay tuned to find out!

Natalie leaves his office, promising to return.

Continue, An hour later.

Corny chewed the rubber of a pencil that the office provided him with, while listening to Carlito. He was the first interesting student that Corny got the chance to interrogate.
“So, you took Trevor to the forbidden leaders’ quarters?” Corny asked after Carlito told him where he last saw Trevor.
“Yes.” The kid replied.
“Okay.” Corny said and removed the pencil from his mouth. “Do you know why Steven would have made you take Trevor there instead of the hospital?”
Carlito shrugged.
“Why are your leaders’ quarters forbidden?”
“I am not sure.” The boy replied. “But, I think it’s because our leaders have retired.”
“Who and who have access to the leader’s quarters?”
“Maybe Trevor. He is the former President.”
“The janitor, maybe?”
“I don’t know.”
Corny noted down.
“Oh… yeah. There is that store keeper who takes the leaders’ clothes to the laundry outside school. He was the one that Steven talked to, to have Trevor in to the leaders’ home.” Carlito said.
“Thank you Carl.” Corny said writing that down and glanced at the Mexican kid. “How did you know Erin Shawn or Michael Morningstar before they died?”
“Mmh. Just that they were in upper class. Michael was also running for President.”
“When did you last see either of them before the events that took place this morning?”
“I saw Michael on Sunday.”
“Where?”
“At the hospital.”
“You went to see him?”
“No. I went to see my girlfriend, Felicia. She is being attended in a room that used to be next to Michael’s.”
Corny raised one inquisitive eyebrow. “Oka_ey. Was Michael with somebody else or maybe an attending nurse?”
“Amh… not that I remember exactly but, he was very sick according to Felicia.”
Corny paused in silence. He had already, interrogated Felicia, the nurses and the doctors. None of them had much to offer. According to the doctors, Morningstar had no visitors apart from the school reporters who just arrived. More than that, Felicia was only awaken by the shots. She did not see anything.
He sighed. “Thank you Carlito. You may leave.”
“Thank you sir.” He said and rose, leaving.
Corny took the receiver from his desk to contact his assistant. “Has Natalie returned, Millies?”
“No sir.” She replied.
“Who’s next for the interrogation?”
“I have been told that there is a rebel.” Millies replied.
Corny rubbed his forehead with his fingers, thinking. “What is the rebel about?”
“The shootings. The other lieutenants have gone to check it out.”
“Okay. Please have someone find Natalie Bradley.”
“Yes sir.”
Corny hang up and turned down to his notary. “What am I missing?” he wondered aloud.
He went over the crime scene as he arrived, in his head.

Previously on Hamerton; Fred and Cheryl appear at the school hospital as agreed to interview Michael Morningstar. But, they, along with the medical practitioners of the hospital, discover Erin and Michael's murdered bodies in Michael's ward.

Natalie arrived Hamerton at around 2pm when there was already a commotion because of the incident that happened. She was struck by a bunch of police cars that packed in front of the chief building and many of the students forming groups, chattering about some things.
She was lucky to get the attention of two juniors who came to receive her and helped her with her bags from the main gate to the way leading to the girls’ dorm.
“What’s going on?” she asked them as they crossed the school compound.
“Well Miss Natalie, Michael Morningstar was beaten up and they say that Trevor did it.” Samantha, one of the juniors replied.
“Trevor did not hit Michael.” Carlito, the other junior objected in defense. “I already told you. I saw Trevor myself. He was sick and we carried him to the leaders’ quarters.”
Natalie furrowed her eyebrows. “Wait, wait… Trevor was sick?” she asked.
“Yes.” Carlito replied nodding. “On Saturday after the interview in the school theater.”
“Oh my God!” Natalie exclaimed. “And what happened to him? Where did you take him?”
“The leaders’ quarters. But, he has gone missing until now and that’s why people are saying that he beat up Michael Morningstar.” Carlito said.
Now Natalie was more confused. “But, the leaders’ quarters is off bounds.”
“Maybe not because, Trevor Tommy is the former President.” Samantha explained proudly.
“That’s where Steven had us take Trevor.” Carlito said to Natalie, neglecting Samantha’s comment.
“Did he tell you why there and not the hospital, Carlito?” Natalie asked.
“No Miss Natalie.” Carlito replied.
“Where is Trevor now?” Natalie asked.
“No one knows.” Samantha replied.
Natalie sighed. That was what Erin warned her about. She glanced at the chief building and seeing the police vehicles, she inquired, “Why all those police cars? Are they looking for Trevor?”
Carlito shrugged.
“Some say that they were gunshots in the school hospital. Carlito, didn't you see the ambulance car arrive at around one?” Sam replied and asked.
“Really?” Natalie asked already alarmed.
“Yeah.” Sam said.
“I never saw that.” Carlito said shrugging. “But, that does explain why everyone is nattering about something.”

They had reached a pavement way to the girl’s dorm and Carlito had to leave them. Natalie requested Samantha to take her bags to her room while she went to look for Ingrid or Erin. Samantha agreed and they parted.
