Cheryl
had to do something to take control of the situation. “Mr. Morningstar sit
down!” she demanded.
Michael
resumed his seat and the crowd’s roar lowered to murmurs.
“You’re
manipulating the students.” Trevor said angrily.
“Listen
Trevor.” Michael begun feeling more confident than ever before. “You are the
one who is manipulating the students. Hamerton needs a President who will give
them what they want.” He raised his voice in the next clause. “More
entertainment, more jokes, less seriousness. We are ambassadors and duke’s
children for God’s sake.”
“Yeeeah.”
The crowd roared supporting him.
Trevor
strangled his hands into fists. Michael made him very agitated. And to think that
the students supported him…
“What!”
Ingrid exclaimed frowning at Michael.
Erin
retained her rigid face.
“Yes.”
Michael said and went on humorously. “In your leadership Trevor, our students
did not get the right treatment. You hindered us of entertainment. We had more
debates and examinations.” He paused becoming ridicule to taunt him. “You were
more of an academic minister than,” he paused, to lay emphasis on; “Hamerton
President.”
The audience
exploded at this.
Michael
winked at Trevor who was already fuming with fury.
“You
are a mediocre!” Ingrid shouted.
“Shut
up!” Michael shouted.
“Now,
all of you. We shall not turn this floor of referendum into a bar house.” Cheryl
intervened parting her hands in the air. She turned to the students. “Please,
may we have your attention? Calm down please, so that we can continue with the
interview.”
The students
scarcely hushed.
Fred,
Cheryl’s assistant and camera man, walked from the crew to whisper something in
her ear.
Cheryl
showed surprise and when Fred left, all eyes were on her. She drew in a deep
breath and made the announcement. “Okay, a round of applause please as we
welcome a new guest to this interview, Madam Susanne Hamerton.”
Though
shocked, the audience broke into an applause as the chief school director
approached the stage. She wore a skirt suit, brown in color, which also had the Hamerton
logo at the coat pocket.
Some crew
members gave her a seat and she offered her smile to the guests who stared at
her with amazement.
“Welcome
Madam Sue.” Cheryl said. “I believe that all of Hamerton would like to hear
your opinion on the elections and perhaps, question our candidates.”
“Thank
you and ah-” she turned to Morningstar. “Michael Morningstar, you have the
liberty of becoming President but, not to ruin my school. Do you get that?”
Michael
swallowed and nodded. “Yes ma’am.”
She
did not stop there. “Ingrid is right. You are mediocre. This school needs an
intelligent President like Trevor who can change Hamerton. Trevor did more than
all past Presidents of Hamerton. He changed the annual performance of the
students. He calmed the students during the times of uproar. Can you do all
that?”
Michael
was muted. He knew that he could not do even half of what Trevor did.
“Can
you?” Madam Sue repeated.
Michael
sighed. “No.”
“I
thought so too.” Madam Sue said with satisfaction. “And you do not qualify.”
“I can
try.” Michael said begging for the opportunity.
“No
one can try Michael. This no game, it’s three years of terms of office
ministering over thousands of students.” She turned to Tobias. “And you boy,
can you do all that?”
Tobias
nodded. “I can.”
“Really?”
she asked. “How many followers do you have?”
“On
twitter?”
The lady
frowned. “I am talking about Hamerton Mr. Tobias. Where are your marbles?”
Tobias gulped. His back was already wet with
sweat. “Amh… many many. I have got my-”
“Stand.”
Madam Sue commanded, cutting him short.
“Wha…
what ma’am?”
“You
heard me. Stand and tell us what you will do for Hamerton if you get the chance
to become President.”
Tobias
took some time and rose. “Ready. Amh…” he turned to the audience who were
still, waiting for him to say anything. “Ha.. Hallow. I… sorry. My name is Tobias.
I would like you to vote for me to become President because, well…” he paused,
losing his words in front of the thousand eyes.
“Booooo
Booooo” the students called.
“Sit
down already.” Madam Sue said with impatience.
Trevor
and the others watched patiently.
The lady
rose, facing the crowd. “So Hamerton, have you got your President?”
There
was a confusion at the question. Some said Morningstar and some said Trevor.
Trevor himself was lost. The girls were most certain that they would not get anywhere without Natalie.
No one understood Madam Sue's intention. And she declined the stage, leaving them stunned.
what happened next? what will be the fate of Hamerton? Is Natalie coming back? stay tuned to find out.
