Chapter Twelve: CONFUSION
Leaning on
the window of an airplane, Natalie recalled what happened. She could not get
the gruesome sight of Ashleigh lying in a pool of blood, out of her mind. Somehow,
she felt responsible for Ashleigh’s death. Maybe, if she had not screamed ‘cat’
or she did not make Paula hate her so much, Ashleigh would still be around.
As she
left, there was already a political catastrophe. The police discovered the wire
that was tied on the landing of the staircase and concluded that Ashleigh was
murdered. In the tension, Lucie confessed and now, the French government was
already involved.
Natalie
shut her eyes, sighing. The international competitions was supposed to be her
way of getting a full year scholarship at Hamerton so that, she could be President,
so that she could save everyone at Hamerton. Now, she might never be able to
achieve all that.
“Oh
Trevor.” She murmured “I wish that I could talk to you right now.”
“Hello
passengers I am Adalric Adenauer, chief pilot of Germanwings. I hope that you
have had a comfortable flight from Berlin. We are arriving John F. Kennedy
International airport in 30 minutes.”
The speakers
sounded in the cabin.
Natalie
reopened her eyes. At least, she was nearing home.
Inside
the J.F. Kennedy airport terminal, Mrs. Bradley waited anxiously. She already
learned what had happened in the international competitions in Berlin. More than
what Natalie told her over the phone, the story of Ashleigh’s murder by her
fellow student was all over the news. It hit the headlines in many papers and
TV stations because it was a crime on an international scale. Mrs. Bradley just
like many other parents did not trust to take her overseas.
As she
paced anxiously in the waiting lounge, Mrs. Bradley felt a buzz in her trouser
pocket and took out her phone.
“Honey?”
she greeted first, sighing with relief.
“Is
she there yet?” Mr. Bradley sounded.
“No
dear. But, a travel agent informed me that their flight will arrive soon.”
“Okay.
Did you talk to her? I couldn't, the call was very expensive.”
“Yes.
I did.”
“How
is she?”
“She
told me that she was okay.” She sighed. “I am so worried honey. Did you see on
the news what that girl said? She confessed to have plotted to harm our Natalie.
That fall was meant for our baby.”
Dad sighed
too. “Oh I watched the story last night. Honey, don’t panic. She will be fine. Besides
that, you have to calm down and be strong for our daughter.”
Mom managed
a smile. “And for the one that’s on the way.”
“Yes
honey.”
“Oh
Brad, I wish that you were here with us. I miss you already.”
“I
wish that I could give up everything and be with you but, the situation now doesn't allow that to happen. I have to provide food for you and the baby and
of course, Natalie’s school fees will be needed soon.”
“Yes
honey. I understand.”
There
was a beep and Mr. Bradley came, “Sweetie, I have to go now. Bye.”
“Yes
honey. Kisses.” She bid before the line went dead. She drew a sigh afterward,
feeling sad about the tragedies that met their life.
Mr. Bradley
spent last of his savings to satisfy Natalie’s desire to participate in the
debate competitions by purchasing her go-and-return tickets. When an
opportunity came for him to leave the country with his new company, he could
not waste it. Now the family was separated with Mr. Bradley in a country in
Africa for the next six month and Mrs. Bradley had to take care of everything
on her own.
what happened next? stay tuned to find out.
