Caitlin stood behind her
brother’s bedroom door. She hesitated going in thinking about the new life that
she would experience after moving to England. A new continent, country, people
and more over, school. She had spent all of her 14 years in Brooklyn. It would
be hard to adjust to a new environment.
Truly, all of her mother’s
memories laid there, in Brooklyn. According to their father, Caitlin’s mom and
dad shifted to that house after they got married in 1995. Caitlin’s mom spent
more than half of her life being sick. All of the family’s relatives expected
that she would die and did not believe when she survived the 38 years of her life.
She was suffering from Diabetes and that was what that killed her.
They used to keep sugar far from
her and the two children adopted the habit. They never took sugar or cheered
sugary foods. Few times, whenever Natalie compelled her, did Caitlin taste ice
cream or grab a bite of cake. Other than that, none at all.
She opened the door and
walked into the room. It was mid-sized with a bed facing the entrance and a full
length mirror opposite the bed and standing beside a closet situated against
the wall.
The young boy Ralph, sat on
the floor leaning on the bed side and facing the mirror. His suitcase was next
to him and his dresses piled around him.
He saw her reflection on the
mirror and called “Did you get to see her?”
“Yes. Where’s dad?”
“He went out a short while
ago. But, he’s going to be back don’t worry.”
Caitlin closed the door
behind her and went to crouch next to him.
keep in touch....
