Natalie returned back to her office and found her
secretary’s desk empty. She sighed at that. The talk with her mother made her
reconsider about her actions toward Ivan and Ingrid. She realized that she
had no right to get mad at him, after all, Ivan was always there for her. As
for Ingrid, Natalie decided that it was not fit to doubt her without hearing an
explanation.
Maybe Ingrid truly shot Nicky to save Natalie’s life.
Maybe she was on their side always and Natalie was wrong about her.
She entered her office and found Ingrid drawing some
papers out of an envelope.
She did not turn when Natalie walked in.
“Ivan?” Ingrid called. “We have a ball on 14th?”
“It’s me.” Natalie said and greeted Ingrid’s face.
“Oh. Did you have a chat with your mom?” Ingrid
asked.
“Yes and… Ingrid, I’m sorry for the way I behaved
towards you and Ivan after we left the park. The talk with Trevor just got me
confused.”
“It’s okay.” Ingrid said, retrieving the brochures
in the envelope. “What did he tell you anyway?”
Natalie rounded her desk and sat behind it. “Well…
his father doesn't want him here. That is why he has been out of communication
with me and the rest of Hamerton.”
“I can imagine that.” She said with a high degree assurance.
Natalie narrowed her eyes, looking at her friend. She
now felt the need to ask the question that she never asked before. “Tell me
Ingrid, how do you know Trevor and his family?”
“Well…” Ingrid begun, evading Natalie’s gaze. “He is
my cousin so, we know a lot about each other.”
Natalie was not satisfied. “Really? Can you tell me
about him?” Natalie asked and when Ingrid gave her a queer look, she forged an
explanation. “Let’s say that, I’m not ready for a surprise like the one we had
at the park this afternoon. You know… with Henry.”
“Oh. Well… you should know that, Trevor’s dad is
very rich. More than that, his mother, before she went crazy, was a politician
and a minister in the states. She had a lot of enemies and not only that,
Kenneth, Trevor’s brother also hated him. So, generally, Mr. Tommy had to do
everything to protect his son.” She said quickly.
Natalie furrowed her eyebrows in confusion. “Wait,
wait, wait. Let’s do this, I’ll ask questions and then you’ll answer. Is that
alright?”
Ingrid nodded and placed the envelope on the table.
“Who is the Henry guy?”
“Trevor’s guard.”
“How many of his likes are there?”
“Four.”
“Four.”
“Alright. Who is Corny Howls?”
“You have met Howls?”
“Yes.” Natalie replied, nodding.
“Oh. Where?”
“Berlin and here.”
“Let me guess, under police interrogation?”
“Yeah.”
“Well, Corny is a police officer but, not an
ordinary one.” Ingrid said and leaned forward. “Once, Trevor told us that Corny could help to take down the seniors.” She drew back. “He works for Mr. Tommy
and he is also an agent of Interpol.”
Natalie nodded with her eyebrows raised. “Okay. Mr.
Tommy surely keeps a lot of intelligence around Trevor.”
“Yes. Basing on their circumstances.”
“What about you? Have you never been a target or
something? You are after all of the same blood.”
She was silent, leaning back on her chair.
“Ingrid?” Natalie called. “Is there something that
you are not telling me?”
Ingrid glanced at Natalie with a somber look on her
face. “Natalie… it’s a long story.”
“C’mon Ingrid. Tell me.”
Ingrid sighed. “Maybe… Maybe Trevor should tell you
himself.”
“Tell me what? You are here and he’s not. I want to
hear from you because, it’s you that I asked about.”
Ingrid rounded her eyes. “Well, a long time ago,
Trevor was not as he is today.” She begun and paused, remaining silent.
“Not as how he is today? How’s that?” Natalie asked.
“Well, he was arrogant, spoiled. He had all the bad
qualities. I didn't know this, I was just told.” She said and paused again.
“Okay. Go on.” Natalie said feeling slightly
impatient.
“So, he started abusing drugs.”
Natalie’s mouth dropped open. “I thought that his
brother got him into them.”
“No. But, it’s not like Kenneth loved or cared for
Trevor either. The drugs that Trevor was using were very powerful. By thirteen,
he had developed a kidney cancer that was going to kill him. At that time, the
only one that could save him was …you’re not going to like this but, the only
one who could save Trevor was Nicky.”
“What?” Natalie asked in shock and disbelief.
“Yes. But, it happened that, Nicky’s parents were of
the opposition party.”
“Opposition to?”
“Trevor’s mom’s party.”
Natalie nodded. “So, what happened?”
“Mr. Tommy wanted to do everything to save his son.
But, there was no way to talk to Nicky’s parents to allow their daughter to
grant Trevor a transplant.” she paused. Probably she felt heavy in her heart to
let it out.
“What happened Ingrid?” Natalie asked.
“I don’t know. Somehow, Nicky’s parents were
involved in an accident. They both died and she was orphaned.”
“Oh my God.” Natalie gasped.
Ingrid looked down, feeling sorry too. She went on, “Mr.
Tommy and Kenneth took her in and pretentiously, made her part of their
family. Against her knowledge, they took her kidney and transplanted it to
Trevor’s body so that he would not die.”
“My God. That
was so cruel. Wasn't there a way to ask her family?… I mean, they could have agreed to save Trevor’s life without having to go through all that.”
“That was what I thought and told it to Mr. Tommy’s
face.”
“That is why he isolated you. Because, you knew.”
Natalie reckoned.
“That and-”
“Wait.” Natalie interrupted her. “How did you meet
Trevor for the first time?”
“My father’s funeral in Brooklyn.” Ingrid replied. “We
met occasionally afterward when I moved to their house in Los Angeles.”
“Oh. So, when you realized everything, Mr. Tommy got
mad at you?”
“That and-”
Natalie frowned. “How could he? He is such a bad
person. He has no heart.”
“Natalie don’t say that. He is soon to be your dad
in law.”
“But, he was so bad at you, considering that you
lost your dad and you’re an orphan. Does Trevor know what his health cost?”
Ingrid shrugged. “I don’t know and I hope that he
doesn’t find out.”
“I just hope that he wouldn’t be like his father.”
“Trevor’s different. He has compassion.”
“And he should or else, I’ll stop being his
girlfriend.”
“Natalie?” Ingrid called taking Natalie’s hand on
the table. “Please listen to me. I have to be honest with you about something.”
“Aaw.” Natalie sounded as if coaxing a little child.
“You have been through a lot my friend. But, don’t you worry. I will always
love you.”
Ingrid sighed. She could not get to Natalie. “Natalie,
it’s not that.”
“Ingrid. Say no more.” Natalie said and withdrew her
palm from Ingrid’s clutch. “Let us find the badge. Did you get anything
earlier? Perhaps a clue on who might have taken it.”
Ingrid was a bit disappointed. She could not let
Natalie know what everyone was hiding from her. “No.” she said.
Natalie sighed. “I don’t understand. How could it
have gone? Just like that?”
Ingrid narrowed her eyes. “Wait a minute… who gave
you the message to meet Trevor at the park?”
“Randolph Michael, Trevor’s brother. Why?”
Ingrid’s eyes flashed. “Of course! There is no best
hacker in Hamerton than him. He must have taken your badge.”
“Are you sure?” Natalie asked.
“No doubt.” She said and rose. “C’mon, let us go to
the primary section and find him immediately.”
“Alright.” Natalie agreed and rose too. “I hope that
you are right.”
They left the room.
