Chapter Eleven: The International Competitions
NEUMANN
OBERSCHULE
A
great burner read at the entrance of a very large compound.
The school
was as big as Hamerton but, had different building styles unlike Hamerton. It
had a stadium and a very large hall that was supposed to venture the whole
competitions.
The school
also had at least 20000 population of students, teachers and other stuff
members who lived in boarding flats inside the school campus.
Natalie
looked out of the window of a bus that she boarded along with others of House
of Representatives from participating schools. The bus (from Neumann) came to
receive them from Berlin Tegel airport. Natalie sat with Suresh Patel, the only
senior who came with other Hamerton participating crew.
“New
man High school.” Suresh said.
Natalie
turned to him from the window, amazed.
“That’s
what Neumann oberschule means.” Suresh explained.
“You
speak Germanish?” she asked.
He laughed
a little. “German, not Germanish. Amh, I know a few words.”
“Great.
We’ll bring home that cup.”
“There’s
a cup?”
“Yeah.
I saw one in a brochure.”
The bus
rolled on a pavement way into the school campus passing a large mass of German
students who waited along the way, cheering for the guests. Natalie was
excited. Her mom was right, this was the chance of her lifetime.
When the
bus paused, Natalie and other people came down and were received by Neumann’s
head boy; Hans Muller.
“Welcome, bienvenue.” He greeted them. “This is Neumann high school. We would be using
English here so, don’t you worry.” He said and added. “Feel at home.”
They
were taken for orientation and Natalie smiled through every experience. Suresh,
her biggest company as well, constantly offered her translations and short
descriptions about each place they visited.
At one
time, she asked him. “Did you study here?”
“No.”
he denied and shrugged. “I just did a little research before coming here.”
After the orientation, they were dispersed into duplex homes and given rooms. Natalie frowned
after being paired with Paulina, the St. Ann Marie girl.
She was
busted.

“God
answered my prayers.” Natalie said.
“I
think so too.” He said and changed the subject. “Can I take you out?”
“Oh.
I know the streets here better than you so, I will take you out.”
“No.
I want to take you out. Can we lock your house?”
“Hey,
is that outing supposed to keep me out of the house overnight?”
“Yeah.
I want to take you to Vegas.”
“Wow!”
she exclaimed, her mouth dropping open. “That will be great but,” she said with
her countenance falling. “How can I leave the house, if anything happens, my
dad will not understand me.”
“I
can hire guards to keep your place if you agree to come with me. And I will
return you here back again tomorrow morning, is that alright?”
She
took time to answer. “I’m not sure… I want to go to Vegas but, wherever I am,
I’m not bored or what… so long as I’m with you.”
“Oh,
I know the problem.”
“Cummon,
I’m not mad at you.”
“No,
you’re humble and all, you don’t want to get spoiled a little. But,” he took
her hands. “You want adventures with me? This is your moment. And I also want
you to meet my mom.”
She
smiled feeling overwhelmed. “Thank you Trevor.”
“So,
it’s a go? Can I call my guards?”
“Okay.”
She replied nodding and rose. “I’ll get changed into something more decent.”
“But,
you’re okay in that dress.”
“Will
your mom like me in this? I think that it’s too short.”
“No.
It’s alright, trust me.”
She smiled
again and scurried out.
The two
had a fantastic time. He took her to Las Vegas where she also got to see his
mom and he returned her home the next morning before both her parents returned
at noon.
Dad
had secured an amount that was enough to sponsor Natalie’s trip to Germany and
even complete her high school. Things changed for the family and Natalie
realized that there was nothing preventing her from going back to Hamerton.
Of all
things, she could not retrieve the diamond watch from Simon. Simon himself had
vanished from Brooklyn along with his friends. Natalie discovered that one of
their crew members died after being shot that night. So, the other guys turned
their back on Simon and he had to go away.
I’ll get back Trevor’s diamond watch. Natalie convinced herself one day. She was leaving
home again.

For new readers;Natalie joins Hamerton, a large school that has a lot of things going on, most of it being illegal and terrorizing. She is agonized by the news of her friend's tragic death and she has to face up with the Hamerton's bloody governance in order to secure the President's badge that has the power to decode a bomb that could cause a large massacre. she teams up with Trevor, the ex and most renowned president of Hamerton and Class D students against Nicky and her fellow evil seniors.
Previously on #HAMERTON; Trevor begins to let Natalie know about his history with Ingrid. Nicky frowns at Steven for being unable to control their replacement for President.
Continue;
“Wait…”
Natalie interrupted Trevor at a point before he concluded. They had already
shifted to the living room and she sat next to him, snuggling her head on his
chest as he put his arm around her back, telling his story. “You were the one
who started using those stuff.”
“Yes.”
Trevor agreed.
“I, I
thought that your evil brother… well, Kenneth put you into them.”
“Ingrid
thinks so too.” He sighed. “Kenneth did me harm but, I also had my own flaws. When
it reached to the brim, I put the blame of my every misfortune on Kenneth.”
She drew
her head back to face him. “Why did you start doing drugs?”
“Peer
pressure.”
“At
school, right?”
He nodded.
“Then
your last kidney started failing.” She reckoned.
“Yeah,
those were pretty hard stuff.”
“And
who gave you the transplant if all your relatives were too older than you?”
“Well,
that’s how Nicky came to my life… as a donor.”
She furrowed
her eyebrows. “Nicky? You knew her since then?”
“Their
family became close to ours, to grant me the donation. I got a transplant and I
don’t know how she was poisoned that she got back at me by revealing the place
where I kept my mom.”
“Oh.”
“I hated
her for that, she hated me back. My brother and father told me that she has
always been up to no good.” He sighed. “I don’t know if I should believe them,
they have always been a cause of my misery.”
Natalie
took some time in silence and posed. “But, Kenneth seems like a nice person.”
“He’s
saying that he’s changing.”
She laid
back on his chest. “How did you start getting sick?”
“Some
months before I joined Hamerton to be away from my brother and father. In a
rehabilitation clinic. The doctor said that it’s a rare disorder caused by the
drugs I was using. But, if I abstained from them and take a special diet with
some exercise, I’ll be just fine.”
She drew
back again. “That day that you got stuck in the elevator, looking for Ingrid,
she was gone. She was out of campus. She wasn't going to come back but, we couldn't let you find out.”
“So,
you kept me in the elevator until you guys figured out a way to clear you of
your charges, demote Nicky and get Ingrid back to Hamerton.” he concluded for
her.
“Yeah…
wait, how did you find out?”
“I
heard you and Ingrid talking in my ward room that Monday morning. You were all
happy that she was back and that she got her green card back. I realized that
she had gone but, I was also happy that I never felt her absence. I was in a
coma.”
“Steven
mentioned that, Ingrid proposed that we should retain you in extreme conditions
so that you could get into coma for the following days until we got her back.”
His eyebrows
raised in obvious shock. “He said that?”
She nodded
strongly.
“It’s
not right. Ingrid knows that there are big chances of me dying if I went
unconscious for more than twenty four hours.”
“So,
you think that Steven lied? He wanted to kill you?”
“And he
must have acted on his own, Nicky had no plans to get stuck with me in that
elevator.” He said, giving her answers.
“This
is bad… he’s been a snake all this while.” She paused. “But, you went into coma
for more than 24 hours, you still remained alive.” She reckoned.
He opened
his mouth to say something but, as the explanation came to mind, he shut his mouth
again.
“Can I
guess?” she asked.
He gulped,
he did not want her to. He knew that it would hurt her feelings if she knew
that Ingrid’s voice woke him from coma while Natalie herself had been laying on
his side throughout the time that he was unconscious.

Previously on #HAMERTON. Trevor begins to tell Natalie that Caitlin is alive but, she interrupts him. Natalie also notifies him that Steven is a traitor of their trust.
Continue;
“Trevor?”
Natalie called softly reaching out for Trevor’s hand on the table and hold it.
“I know how you feel. Especially because Steven is close to Ingrid.”
“I
have to warn her.” He said with his gaze lost in the air.
“You
will but, despite everything we have to confirm this.”
Trevor
gave her a hard look. “How could he do this to me? I trust him. He’s like my
brother. I trust him.”
“Trevor,
please calm down don’t make me see it as a mistake to tell you.”
Trevor
sighed closing his eyes. He tried to contain his anger to please Natalie. The
affection he felt for Ingrid was incomparable. He hoped that there was no one
better for her than Steven but, as it turned out, Steven was a traitor. He not
only betrayed Ingrid but also the rest of Class D members who trusted him as
their leader.
He
opened his eyes again. “I don’t know how to deal with this.” He confessed with
deep aggravation in his voice.
“Well,
we can’t let Ingrid know yet.” She said.
He
drew his hand from Natalie’s hold and rubbed his face. “She loves him?”
“Are
you asking me?”
“Yes.
Does she love him? You’re her friend, tell me. Does she love him?” he asked,
rather harshly.
“I… I
don’t know… I think so.” She replied, nervously.
“I’ll
deal with him.”
“How?”
“I’ll
confront him about my cousin. He can be a part of the sect, I don’t care but,
he can’t lie to Ingrid. He can’t do that. Whatever he has, let it be against me
or… anybody else but, he has to leave Ingrid out.”
Natalie
swallowed from the way he spoke. He had such anger and agony in his words as
they came out, scaring her.
He
relinquished his toast on his plate. “Please give me a minute.” He said and
rose.
“Trevor.
You know that, if you want to let out anything, I’m your girlfriend. I can help
you through it.” She said hoping to keep him from leaving.
He
smiled a little. He had to adjust to the new life. One person more to communicate
with than his sick mom and Ingrid. Another woman.
“Thank
you Natalie.”
“It’s
alright. Besides, you never told me your history with Ingrid and why you were
so attached to her. I want to hear it.” She asked.
“Okay.”
He said sitting back. “It starts as…”
*********************************************************************
Nicky
stood in front of a bathroom sink, staring at her reflection on the mirror. She
recalled Trevor’s words that he said to her when they were stuck in the
elevator. ‘All my brother’s allowances, I
don’t see them making you up.’
A
while had passed but, she never forgot his statement. He detested her and
slightly, that hurt her.
She
did do him wrong maybe but, he deserved it. He cheated on her with a girl that
he claimed was his cousin. That made her made her angry. She had to get back at
him.
She thought that and gave the sink her back, exiting the bathroom. She emerged into a corridor, one
of the Hamerton corridors. She was still at school. She never left.
As
she walked to an elevator opposite her, her cellphone buzzed in her pocket and
she received it.
“Everything
ready?” she asked.
“Yeah.
Intact. Ps, Simon took care of Natalie, she might not be a bother again.”
Steven’s voice sounded over the phone.
Ingrid
smiled devilishly. “That’s great. Is Michael Star with you?”
“He
was here but, he left again.”
She
frowned. “To where? Doesn't that fool understand that being President is a load
of work? He needs training otherwise Hamerton will pick another President.”
“Okay,
don’t get angry. I’ll call him.”
“You
should have done that before telling me that everything is intact!” she bawled
and hang up. “Damn you Trevor!” she cursed. She cursed him for being so perfect
and his replacement had to be a stupid dude like Michael Star. She knew that
Hamerton could raise another candidate from its large mass that will obviously
be better than Michael. If that happened, all their efforts would go to waste.

Previously on #HAMERTON Kenneth rises up to find his car missing but, he finds out later that Trevor borrowed it to go out. He asks Trevor to stop getting distracted and talk to Natalie about Hamerton
Continue;
He
walked back into the house and paused at the threshold of the kitchen, watching
Natalie as she smeared butter on her toast.
She
glanced up at him. “Toast?”
“Thank
you.” he said and abandoned his post to join her. They sat opposite each other
behind the kitchen round table. They were silent at first until Natalie spoke
again. “Where did your brother go?”
“To a
hotel.”
“Alright.”
“Natalie,
I have to say something.”
She
swallowed. “Alright…”
“Caitlin-”
“It’s
fine. I know that you tried your best to save her. I’m sorry for judging you
and I am ready to be President.”
“Wait…
seriously?”
“Yes.”
Natalie replied nodding with determination. “I’m undertaking this task because,
I don’t want what happened to Caitlin to happen to anybody else.”
But, she is still alive. Trevor was thinking of saying but, he refrained. He
guessed that Natalie needed the stimulant to become President of Hamerton. He
could not let her know that Caitlin did not die in the bomb blast. Not yet. He
took in a deep breath to bury Caitlin’s still alive story. He also wondered if
Natalie will ever forgive him if she realized that he concealed the truth from
her.
“Are
you alright Trevor?” she asked when he was silent.
He
nodded trying to fake a smile. “I’m okay.”
“Aren't you glad that I’m joining you? Though I’m still afraid of what the others might
still think of me.”
“They
will be fine. I’ll talk to them.”
Natalie
was unsatisfied. Her boyfriend looked moody. “Something’s wrong.” She posed.
“I
agree.” He said. “I’m worried about you and the guys who attacked you.”
“There’s
no saying that they won’t come back but, my father will be here and my mom.
I’ll be protected and I won’t get hurt while my parents are around.” She said
thinking that he wanted to leave.
“We
have to report them to the police.”
“Then
they won’t stop coming after me. I want to let go of everything except well,
one thing.” Your diamond watch.
“What?”
he asked.
She
sighed first but, she could not mention it. “My bag. It had my stuff, my phone,
the house keys…”
“I
can buy you another phone.”
“The
chip inside it is what I’ll be missing.”
“Alright.
So, if you don’t suggest that we should report them, how do you think that we
will get your things back?”
“I’ll
go talk to him.”
“Never.”
“Trevor,
I know him. He won’t be able to hurt me.”
“He
wanted to rape you.”
“Then…
maybe but, I will make him realize that, I can report him. He’ll give me back
my stuff and we’ll be apart.”
“I
will not let you take that risk Natalie. He sounds like a ruthless guy. No
gentleman ever does that to lady.”
Natalie
remained silent. Her mind was made up, she had to recover Trevor’s watch. If he
did not agree then, she would do it once he was gone. She recalled something
and decided to point it out. “Trevor, in my rough encounter with Simon, I did
learn something.”
“Are
we still on this issue?”
“No.
This relates to Hamerton. Simon was quite detailed of my life in Hamerton. He
had an informant inside our school.”
“How’s
that even possible? He’s not part of Hamerton.”
“No
but, he was a part of me. Someone was diffusing issues about me and my
relationship with you. I think that he wanted to make my life and yours
miserable.”
Trevor
frowned. “I don’t get it. Who would do that and why?”
“Neither
did I understand. I know one thing though, that guy knows that we are up to bringing
them down and he wants me out of the picture. He must have known obviously that
Simon could keep me from going back to Hamerton if he knew that I was seeing
another man.”
“So,
you’re meaning to tell me that the informant is a guy?”
Natalie
nodded strongly.
“I was
thinking of Nicky. She’s the only person that I know from Hamerton who could
stretch her claws to the end of the earth just to ruin the two of us.”
“It’s
maybe not about us, it’s about safeguarding their own interests. To destroy the
school.”
“Did
Simon give you a name?”
“Yes
and I know that he couldn't have made it up because he doesn't know anyone from Hamerton.”
“So,
who is it?”
“Steven
Dairy.”
Trevor
drew back. “What?”
“I don’t
believe it myself.”
“Wait,
I trust Steven. He said that he loves my cousin.” He went on with panic in his
voice. He knew that if Steven was a part of the bad guys then, his cousin will
be in danger. And not only that but also, Ingrid was being used.

10:00am
Kenneth’
watch read when he opened his eyes. He stayed up for most of the night and
switched on the TV to keep him company. At 5am, he felt sleepy and dozed on the
couch. When he was up again, he got on his feet quickly. He was somewhat confused,
he was at a girl’s house, his brother was in her room, with her. What if her parents
or the neighbors showed up suddenly?
He
started into the kitchen. “Trevor? Trevor?” he called into the empty room. Just
then he also recalled something and ran outside.
He
paused at the threshold, staring at the empty yard. My car! He ran back inside and climbed up the stairs. “Trevor?
Trevor?”
He
stopped at the first door and tried to open it but, it did not give in. He
cursed and proceeded to the next door.
It
was a guest’s bathroom. Well… since I’m
already here…
He
left about a minute later and tried more doors in the floor, none of them gave
up to him. There was yet another floor and he went up calling Trevor’s name.
“Boy? Trevor? I’m going to kill you for this.” He promised and tried the first
door he met.
It
opened to reveal Natalie’s bedroom. The bed itself was rough and some of the
girl’s clothes were folded and laid on a night stand. A sound of running water
came from a probably shower cubicle inside the room. Natalie’s voice came
afterward. “Trevor? Is that you?”
“No.
Where is he?” Kenneth replied with a little relief that someone else was still
alive in the house.
“Oh.
He went to fetch breakfast.”
So he took the car… “He took the car?”
“I
think so.” Natalie replied.
Kenneth
closed the door and walked back downstairs. Trevor must have not wanted to
disturb him.
Luckily,
when he got to the living room, his car came back with its familiar purr.
Kenneth waited till Trevor got down holding a few bags. He locked the car door
and greeted Kenneth at the entrance.
“How
was your night?” Trevor asked, smilingly.
“You
took my car. For a moment there, I thought that it was stolen.”
“No.
Its alright. I only borrowed it and guess what, I went to Central Park.”
“What’s
so special about that place? Cummon, give me the keys.”
Trevor
handed the car keys to his brother and they walked into the house. “The special
thing is that, I've been there and you haven’t.” Trevor said.
“Are
we still discussing that topic?”
“Yeah.
You have been to many places, but not to Central Park…”
“Ha
ha ha. I’m sad.”
“You’re
being sarcastic.”
“No.”
Trevor
shook his head with disappointment and took the bags to the kitchen. Kenneth
followed him, yawning. “So, what did you get us Trevor?”
“Bread.”
“Isn't there anything edible in this city?”
“The
city yes, here, I don’t know.”
Kenneth
walked to the table where Trevor laid the bags and took one of them. He peeped
in and smiled at his brother. “I was almost going to tell you that we’re going
back to Vegas.”
“Then
we’re going to be here for a few days.”
Kenneth
took out Five Guys burger from the Ziploc bag and took a bite.
“Wait,
you’re not going to have that without this.” Trevor said taking out a bottle of
wine for him.
“Wow.
Thank you.”
Natalie
had come down for breakfast after hearing the Bugatti park outside the house.
She joined them in the kitchen wearing a light brown knee length dress with
white dots on it. She let her hair dangle free on her back and wore a light
make up on her face.
“Tea,
anyone?” she asked after seeing the wine.
“Maybe
Trevor. I’m cool.”
Natalie
shrugged and walked to a heating kettle on the cooker.
Kenneth
rounded the table and whispered into Trevor’s ear. Soon, they left together to
Kenneth’ car outside. When Natalie turned around, she was left alone. “Oh
well.”
“So,
tell me.” Trevor said to Kenneth after they were outside.
“I am
going to be in the place that I booked for us. I need to refresh and stuff,
thanks for the wine.”
“Wait,
we can take out our bags and do that here.”
“No
Trevor. You also have to respect this girl and her parents. We’re two
strangers, they don’t know us… they are gone. It wouldn't be best for us to
take advantage of their daughter or their absence. I’ll get a shower and change
at the hotel. You will have to be with her and talk to her about Hamerton.
Don’t forget why we came. Got that?”
“Okay.”
“Not
just an okay, you have to promise me.”
“I
promise.” Trevor said nodding. “What about the people who tried to attack her
yesterday? Are you going to take care of that?”
“You
told me that it’s the work of the police.”
Not any longer.
Trevor was thinking. The issue got
personal… “She knows those guys. One of them is her old boyfriend. His
name is Simon.”
“We’ll
file a case then.” Kenneth replied easily.
“When?”
“After
we talk her to becoming President.”
Trevor
was silent.
Kenneth
pat his shoulder lightly. “It’s gonna be alright, I promise. I’ll see to it
that nothing wrong happens to her or you. We need her.”
Trevor
took in a deep breath and nodded.
“Okay.
Goodbye.” Kenneth said.
“Alright.”
Trevor replied and gave him way to open the car door and get in.
I can do this.
Trevor thought. I have to do this…

they climbed up the stairs together.
“Is

“Yeah.
I think so.”

me guess. No keys again.” Trevor said when she remained standing there emptily.
“No,
my door has a twin key. Caitlin had it.”
She’s alive. Trevor thought of saying but, refrained. The night
was theirs. No more grieving. “So, how are we going to open it?”
She
placed her hand on the knob, twisting it. “It broke a little bit last week. I
forgot to tell my dad to fix it. Perhaps if I twist it a little, with a little
push, it can-”
Kang!
The
door sounded and pushed in. Natalie laughed. “It worked.”
“Little…”
Trevor murmured.
“What?”
Natalie asked turning to him after switching on the room lights.
“You
use little too often.”
“No.
Seriously?”
“Your
room smells nice.”
“I
just sprayed a little… Oh. Okay, I give up, I’m a little messed up.”
He
laughed and she did too. “You’re great.” He said drawing close to her. She
recalled his look with one that he gave him months back at the disco party in
Hamerton.
She
drew back however. “I want to take a shower, I feel not so great.”
“You’re
still mad at me aren't you?”
“No.
I wanted to say sorry to you too. What I did was unforgivable. I turned back at
you guys at the time that you needed me the most. I agree to all that Erin
said. I’m selfish, self-centered. I don’t know.” She said and sighed.
“We
do need you you know?”
She
nodded. “And I’m ready for that.”
He
smiled and took another step close to her. “Natalie, I want to be with you. I
don’t want to leave your side even for a minute. I have my weaknesses, I agree
but, can we fix this?”
“You
know, I was thinking that, I never got to be your friend. I was and probably
still am jealous of all your buddies, Ingrid, Erin… you even knew Caitlin
before me. I never had adventures with you and we started dating anyway.”
“A
dating that lasted three days?”
“I
guess I love you anyway.” She said and looked down.
“You
don’t have to be jealous of my friends. They have a part in my life but, I
desire you and it’s you that I want to be with. It’s you that I came looking
for out here anyway. I love you.”
She
nodded and exhaled. “Love is strange, don’t you think so?”
“I
think that I do.”
“I
thought that, friends turn to lovers but, here we are people who hardly spent
time together confessing our feelings for each other.”
“Do
you believe that you love me?”
“I
miss you. I regret ever pushing you away. I forgive you.” she paused. “What’s
the point of being together if we’re not together? The week since we closed
school and I was at home, I couldn't do anything right. I felt like a part of
me was missing.”
He
put a hand around her waist, sending some kind of electric waves in her body.
She trembled. “I’m here now.” He whispered and she locked her eyes feeling his
warmth as his body came against her own. “No need to feel anything except me.
As I feel you.”
“Trevor.”
She whispered, probably feeling him. “I don wanna be separated from you again.”
She said releasing a tear.
“No.”
he agreed. “Never.”
With
that, he connected their lips and she opened her door for him. His tongue
entered, rubbing and brushing hers. Natalie was attacked by desire, to have
him, to have him forever by her side. The events at the alley scared her, she
was not sure if she could see the light of day again. She needed a miracle and
he came. He was there, like a miracle, her miracle.
Trevor’s
hands traveled fast. The passion drove him. There was a mixture of feelings,
wanting her and needing her. He found Natalie as a consolation for all that he
had been through in his life; His sick mom, his brother and his father’s manipulation:
Nicky and her lies and schemes: Hamerton. Natalie made him look away from all
that, she was the missing piece all his life. He could not let go of her. Not then,
not ever.
He
found his way to the hem of her blouse and begun raising it as they tumbled to
her bed, holding each other passionately. Natalie giggled when he tickled her
slightly. Her blouse was off and she remained with a pink bra and pants.
She
opened her eyes and stared at him as he unbuttoned his shirt. “Wow.”
“Yeah?”
“You
are so handsome.”
“You’re
very beautiful.”
She
got her feet on the bed, squeezing to the head of it. “Have you ever done this?”
“What?”
he asked.
“What
you’re about to do.”
He
looked around and nodded. “Don’t worry, it’s going to be okay.”
“I
have, once… just not with the right guy.”
He
furrowed his eyebrows and remained attentive.
“Simon,
the guy who attacked me tonight. He was my boyfriend. I didn't like him. I was
so obsessed with maturing and well… getting something to share with my friends.
He was a bad guy and I knew it.” She sighed. “I was stupid, I didn't care.”
He
got on the bed too, with her. “Did he… hurt you? Before tonight that is.”
“Worse.”
She paused, struggling to get rid of the load that she was carrying inside her
for a long time. “The only thing that, I never told Caitlin in my life…” she
continued and Trevor remained patient, listening. Her eyes tingled with tears. “I
got pregnant. I was so scared. I was under pressure and stress… I aborted the
baby… I, I never even went to a doctor… I did… I used Chemistry.” She concluded,
sighing deeply.
“Oh
my God, I’m so sorry.” Trevor said sympathetically and kissed her on her
forehead.
“Trevor…
whatever happens to us, I don’t want to lose our friendship.” She said crying.
He
embraced her. “I’m never going to leave your side Natalie, count on that.”

Continue;
A
loud scree filled the atmosphere when the driver braked at an inch in front of
Natalie. She let out a shriek in response, tottering back a few steps. When she
felt the ground below her, she released her face. She was alive.
I am alive!
Just
then the driver’s and the passenger’s doors of the car opened and two men
rushed to her.
“Oh
my God are you okay?” the first asked.
Natalie
met his gaze. Even in the dark, she could still recognize it. “Trevor?”
Before
he replied, the other guy and driver of the car drew closer. “I’m terribly
sorry. I’m a terrible driver. And what’s up with all that running?”
“Natalie.”
Trevor reckoned.
Natalie
broke into a large smile and hugged him tightly. He hugged her back and
Kenneth, the other guy, stared at them with amazement.
Trevor
felt Natalie’s heartbeat running first. She was also sweating and wetting his
shirt. He drew back. “Were you chased?”
She
did not even give him a chance to reply, she held him tight and initiated a
kiss that also took Trevor off guard. It was more strange than passionate. But,
wanting to make up for the time that they were apart, he kissed her back with
somewhat equal exuberance.
“Okay…
Show’s over. Guys? Please?” Kenneth said with impatience. Unless Trevor knew
that girl, it was love at first sight or kiss or… something.
The
couple drew apart but, Trevor still had his attention on Natalie. “What
happened to you?”
“I
almost got raped…” she begun, crying. “Those people, they held me down to the
ground… someone got shot. I was so scared.”
“Calm
down Natalie, you’re fine now.” Trevor coaxed holding her hands.
“Which
direction did they run to? I think that I can catch them.” Kenneth said
immediately.
“No!”
Natalie cried. “They are armed… it is too dangerous.”
Kenneth
dug his hand into his jacket pocket taking out his own gun.
“Kenneth-”
Trevor begun.
“What?
It’s licensed.”
“No.
It’s the work of the police. Can we get Natalie home first? She may be tired.”
Kenneth
sighed.
Trevor
turned back to Natalie. “Is it alright to take you home?”
She
nodded.
“Where’s
your place?” Kenneth asked.
“Just
a few blocks away.” Trevor replied for her.
“Wait…”
Natalie said. She just realized that, they were not supposed to be there. “Why
are you in Brooklyn?”
“We
came for you.” Trevor said. “I needed to say that I’m sorry.” The President issues could come later…
“You
are?” she asked. She was impressed by the fact that Trevor went through all the
trouble to apologize to her.
“Yes.
I didn't tell you many stuff about me. It’s not that I didn't trust you but, I
was just afraid of how you may react.”
Natalie
paused for a moment and glanced at Kenneth queerly.
“Amh,
Kenneth, my brother.” Trevor helped.
“Okay,
let’s get out of here.” Kenneth said replacing his gun in his jacket pocket.
They
walked to the drive. Natalie was quite amused with its sleekness and lofty but,
recalling just how rich the Hamerton students were, the Bugatti was not such a
new thing.
She
got in the back seats with Trevor and laid her head on his shoulder for the
following five minutes until Kenneth paused the car in front of Natalie’s gate.
“We’re
here.” Kenneth announced.
Natalie
drew from Trevor’s shoulder and looked out of the window. It was her place
alright but, she did not remember giving them directions.
“How
did you guys find my house?” she asked.
“Ingrid
helped.” Trevor replied.
“Where
is she?”
“Chicago,
I guess. She never came with us.” Trevor said.
Natalie
walked out of the car and Trevor followed. She strolled into their front yard
and straight to the pavement. Just then, she sighed. Until that while she had
not realized that she left her bag in the alley.
Keys.
“Looks
like there’s nobody at home.” Kenneth said staring up the dark flat.
“Are
they asleep? Can’t you knock?” Trevor asked standing on the pavement below
where Natalie stood. He was trying to help.
“No.”
she replied. “I’m alone. My dad traveled and my mom went to Massachusetts with
his great aunt.”
“Oh.”
Kenneth said.
“You
can’t sleep here alone after what happened to you tonight.” Trevor said.
“I
guess not. I left my keys in my bag, my phone the rest of my allowance...” She paused
sighing. “I don’t even know what I’ll
do.”
“You
can come with us to a hotel.” Trevor suggested. “And we can be there till your
family gets back.”
Natalie
was silent, thinking.
“It’s
a good suggestion bro but, if you look at the time, it’s nearing midnight. The streets aren't safe and we don’t even know a hotel close to here. If it were only the
two of us, we could get through the hustle but, Natalie is tired and has been
through a lot already. If we’re able to get her to her familiar environment,
she might get better.”
“So,
what are you thinking?” Trevor asked, open for opinions.
Kenneth
turned to Natalie. “Isn't there any other way into your house?”
“No.
I locked all the doors and windows.”
“Okay.
Can I break in? You can explain that to your parents, right?”
She
chuckled and nodded.
He
drew closer to where she was standing and she paved a way for him.
Kenneth
inspected the door and looked around for a stone. “I wonder why we have glass
windows and doors. It’s easy for robbers to break in and steal.”
“Well,
it’s also easy to escape in case of fire.” Trevor replied him.
Pa!
Kenneth
hit the door and the glass shuttered down. He slipped his hand through the hole
made and felt the door lock from the inside.
“Trevor
our house uses bullet proof glass for all the doors and windows.” Kenneth went
on, trying to unlock the door.
“Well,
perhaps, our life is also different.”
Kenneth
drew out his hand and opened the door from outside. It pushed open and he led
the way in.
“Thank
you.” Natalie said.
“Piece
of cake. I just hoped that it doesn't cost much.” Kenneth said to her.
She
found a switch to light up the living room that they walked into. Trevor closed
the door behind them.
“Please,
have a seat and make yourselves at home.” She said.
“Thank
you.” Kenneth said first, standing close to a sofa but, he did not sit.
Trevor
walked from the door and stood close to her. He stared at her, grinning.
“What
can I get you?” she asked trying to be hospital.
“We
have come a long way but, you go have a rest or something. I’m pretty sure if
you showed Trevor to your refrigerator, he might get me anything to suit my
liking.” Kenneth said.
Natalie
smiled. Kenneth’ personality was quite charming and responsible unlike the way
Trevor expressed. He was probably a good brother.
“Yeah.
Show me your freezer.” Trevor said. “I’m parched with thirst.”
“This
way.” She said and entered the kitchen in the opposite doorway. She light up
the room, thanking herself for tidying it before she left.
She
walked to the fridge and opened it. There were some egg trays, frozen chicken
and some green vegetables. The top freezer had a big bottle of water, some Pepsi™
cans and lemonade juice.
“Where’s
all the beer?” Trevor asked, carelessly.
“We
don’t have beer. We have all these.”
“Red
bull? Malta? Any energy drink?”
“My
mom is pregnant, we put away those.”
“Kenneth
is never going to take Pepsi. Give me water then.”
She
took out the bottle and carried it to a table within the room. She fetched a
glass from a cupboard and filled it with water.
“What
about you?” she asked eventually.
Trevor
already got his own Pepsi can from the refrigerator. “I guess this will do.”
He
took Kenneth’ glass and left the kitchen to the living room. He found Kenneth seated,
taking off his socks.
“What’s
that?” Kenneth asked, grimacing.
“Water.”
Trevor replied and offered it to him. “No beer or anything to suit your liking.”
Kenneth
shook his head and received the water. He took a long puff. “At least it’s
cold.”
“There’s
chicken.” Trevor said.
“Water
and chicken… nah, I’ll pass.”
“You
can try Pepsi.”
“I’m
alright Trevor. Thank you.” he assured and waved his head to the kitchen’s
direction. “Go be with your girlfriend. I’ll stay up guarding in case the
robbers come back.”
“We
can take turns.”
“No.
You need rest.”
Trevor
smiled. “Thank you.”
Kenneth
just shrugged.
Trevor
returned back to the kitchen and found Natalie checking the back door to their
house garage.
“Yeah.”
She said, hearing him walk in. “I never locked this.” She opened it a little
and closed it again.
“Is
it alright? Everything intact?”
She
turned to him and nodded.
“So,
where’s your room?”

For new readers;Natalie joins Hamerton, a large school that has a lot of things going on, most of it being illegal and terrorizing. Where it ended last time; Natalie goes out for supper and meets with an old friend, Simon. he blames her for ditching him after joining Hamerton. He also sees Trevor's diamond watch that Natalie is wearing and that makes Natalie worried.
Continue;
Just after Natalie finished
her supper, Mrs. Charity joined her. She distracted Natalie with stories from
old times.
“I will really miss that
girl.” Mrs. Charity concluded after an hour had gone by.
“I do so every day. She was
my bestfriend.” Natalie added.
Mrs. Charity looked at her
pitifully.
A waiter came to their table.
“Can we have the keys to the store room ma’am.”
Mrs. Charity checked her
apron pockets and when she could not find them she sighed. “Oh. I left them…”
she rose. “Let me get them for you.”
“Let me also leave Mrs.
Charity. I fear that it’s getting late.” Natalie said, collecting her shoulder
bag.
“Okay.
Good night dear. Take care and greet your mom for me.” Mrs. Charity bid and
gave Natalie an air-kiss.
Natalie
left the diner and realized just how warm it was back inside. The temperatures
lowered largely as the night ascended. She hugged herself while walking in the
quieter and darker roads.
What time is it? She wondered. Surely, it cannot have been 10pm
already.
When
Natalie came back home, she was informed of the ongoing robbery in their
streets. That made their council put a curfew of 10pm for all people living in
Brooklyn.
She
took a deep breath when she felt her heartbeat running fast. If it was already
ten then, who knows what may happen to her.
Her
fear rose further up when she visualized silhouettes of some boys coming from
opposite direction. She could not count them quickly, she had no time to. She
tried her best to make unsuspecting steps to an alley close by. It was darker
but, she had no choice but, to hide herself there.
She
panted, crouching behind a dustbin that she spotted in the alley. As she waited
she heard footsteps drawing closer.
“Oh.
God.” She whispered, sighing.
“I
know that you’re out there!” a voice called. “I can feel your breathing.”
Natalie
swallowed. Of course, these were the robbers who were destructing peace of
their town. Simon. And it was all about the diamond watch.
Simon
drew closer to the spot that Natalie was. He had noticed the dustbin vibrating
with the help of a torchlight that he carried.
But, why? Natalie thought. If Simon robbed her, he knows
obviously that she could tell on him. She knows him, why would he take the
risk?
“What
a silly place to hide!” Simon called and kicked the dustbin away making Natalie
fall back with light abrasion on her bare hand.
“Please
don’t hurt me.” She cried covering her face to keep away from Simon’s torch
light.
Simon
bent to her and pulled her up, harshly. He pushed her against a wall making her
cry with agony. She squeezed her eyes, with pain and fear. When she opened
them, she greeted Simon’s ugly face and he forced a kiss on her.
She
struggled, but, his body was heavy against hers, she could hardly move a
muscle. He only drew back when she bit his tongue and angrily, he slapped her,
sending her back to the ground.
The
other guys Simon was with, were laughing behind them and Natalie cursed that
there was no damn night patrol to help her.
She
raised her head to Simon and looked at a gun that he held pointing at her.
“Give
me the diamond watch!” he bawled.
“It’s
not mine.” She cried. She hardly knew the value of diamonds but, she knew the
value of Trevor. “Please, don’t hurt me Simon, I beg you.”
“You’re
so stupid!” he shouted and commanded one of his crew members to take the watch
off her hand.
“No!
Please don’t!” Natalie cried when the evil guy had his heavy hands on her,
un-clutching Trevor’s watch from her hand. When he was done, Simon grabbed her
again.
“Why
are you doing this Simon?” she cried. “I’m supposed to be your girlfriend, I love
you.”
“You
love me? You love me? If you ever did you would never have forgotten about me
when you went to that rich people’s school.”
“I didn't forget you. I told you so that, we were too busy. I lost the phone you
gave me… I’m sorry, please?”
“Shut
up! Shut up!” he shouted with obvious pain in his chest. “You lost the only
gift that I had for you and now, you’re ready to die first before someone
should take the silly watch that your boyfriend gave you!”
“It’s
Caitlin’s.” she lied, cutting him short.
“Don’t
think that I’m so stupid Natalie. I know what has been happening in that
school.” He said with such assurance that made Natalie speechless. “I know that
you’re seeing a guy called Trevor. He is your school President.”
“How
did you… we broke up … it was nothing I swear.”
“Nothing
ey? And you spent time with him at the hospital when he was sick?”
Natalie
gulped, she was lost.
“I
really thank your friend for telling me… your friend wants us to be together
but, you don’t!”
Natalie
could not miss something from Simon’s claims. She had to address it quickly
before he went on, further confusing her. “Simon, please? Okay, this friend, I did
tell her a little about us because, I love you and I talk about you a lot but,
the stuff about Trevor, she must have been making up. Amh, please give me her
name.”
“It’s
not her babe, it’s him and as it appears, you have had many boyfriends in
Hamerton.”
“Him?”
Natalie repeated with disgust. She never recalled to talk to anyone in Hamerton
about her life in New York, especially to a boy.
“Yes.
Steven Dairy or, tell me that you don’t know him.”
Natalie
furrowed her eyebrows. Steven? HOW? WHY? LIKE
SERIOUSLY? She pondered inwardly. But,
he’s on our side. Me, Trevor, Erin… for Christ’s sake he’s dating Ingrid,
Trevor’s cousin and the apple of his eye. Why would Steve want to ruin me and
Trevor’s relationship?
“Silent
ha?” Simon went on, irritating Natalie. She did not like him, she never liked
him. She was only with him because she was bored with the boys of her own
class.
“Simon,
I know you, I know where you stay and most of your friends, why on earth did
you decide to attack me and steal my watch from me without even a mask if you know
that, I can obviously report you.”
“Can
you guess why?”
She
narrowed her eyes. The answer came to mind and she gulped. “Simon, Simon please…
you can’t kill me. My mom, I’m all that she has. Please?” she begged.
“Oh
but, she’s gonna have another baby.” He reckoned, irritatingly. He drew her
from the wall and pushed her on the floor.
Natalie
shrieked but, Simon still had his gun pointed at her. In that narrow
opportunity, Natalie noticed something, only her old boyfriend was armed. His friends
just roamed about, hands free. If only she could access that riffle or kick it
away from him…
“Shut
up or, I’ll kill you now.” He said coming low. “Hold her boys!” he commanded.
Natalie’s
eyes enlarged, she was not prepared for this.
She
tried to cry but, one of the gang already came down covering her mouth. The other
held her hands while, Simon knelt down unzipping his trouser.
Natalie
struggled, trying to shake herself free. She could not believe what was
actually following.
Simon
laughed at her wretchedness like a hyena and put his gun away.
This is my chance. Natalie, it’s either
now or never… she thought and with
her free legs, gave a kick at Simon’s balls.
While
the others were still estranged, she raised her head up hardly and hit one of
the boys who was also holding her hand. Now, only the other hand was held down
but, the rest of her limbs were free.
She
pulled some strength to punch the other guy and jumped on her feet. Simon
already fetched his gun, rising. But, with his torchlight misplaced, Natalie
bet that he could miss an aim.
He
fired his gun, but, Natalie was shielded by one of Simon’s boys who wanted to
hit her.
Natalie
gasped once, seeing the boy slithering against her body to the ground. She did
not catch a glance at Simon but, she heard the other boys panicking when their
fellow member dropped down.
No time. Natalie thought, engaging her escape out of the
alley. She was running where her legs could take her and she heard the gang
coming behind her.
Please. Please. Please. God? She cried, praying that any of the bullets that flew
in the air could not get her.
Suddenly,
a great light appeared from a corner in the road. Natalie was stranded at
first, then realized later that, it was actually a car.
“GOD!”
she cried, the car was coming too first and she had no hope to evade it within
the few feet that they were apart.
Some
yards from her, Simon and his friends turned around, cursing.
Natalie
shut her eyes covering her face awaiting the probable fatal impact. It was
over, the car would hit her and she would die.
